Memorial Drive Elementary (MDE) celebrated the opening of Lucy’s Lab on Tuesday, Aug. 11, with a special ribbon-cutting bringing together students, staff, families and supporters of the Bright Like Lucy Foundation.
The new hands-on STEM learning space is designed for students in pre-K through fifth grade, providing opportunities to explore, create, collaborate and build confidence through innovative STEM experiences. Memorial Drive Elementary is the founding location of Lucy’s Lab, with the space envisioned as a place where curiosity and creativity can thrive for generations to come.
Lucy’s Lab was created by the Bright Like Lucy Foundation, established by Lisa and Brandt Dillon in honor of their daughter, Lucy Dillon, who was a student at MDE. The Houston-based nonprofit supports children’s education, STEM and STEAM programs, athletic scholarships and animal welfare initiatives, carrying forward the interests and spirit that made Lucy shine.
Lucy was 8 years old when she tragically lost her life during the July 4, 2025, Texas Hill Country floods. Through Lucy’s Lab, her legacy now has a special home at her school, inspiring other children to remain curious, confident and bright.
